Our Story…

Laura Camacho founded the Athens Tango Project in 2012, gathering first-rate musicians in Athens, Ga., to teach them to play music she had learned to love as a child in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while watching her grandmother dance to tango on her record player. Her group is called Athens Tango Project which consists of a varying ensemble of musicians led by Camacho. Grammy Award-nominated musician and producer Pablo Aslan describes Camacho as, “one of the movers and shakers in the US tango scene” and as “an excellent bass player and a passionate tanguera armed with an impressive sound, precise rhythm and fine taste.”

After a decade in the Athens, Ga., music scene, Athens Tango Project released its first EP on Jan. 18, 2023. Dubbed “Para Compartir” (To Be Shared), the eclectic and ambitious EP is a testament of their mastery of the intricate nuances of tango music, and also offers fresh and energizing versions of classics with dancers in mind. After listening to the EP and performing with her, Emiliano Messiez, a prolific composer and a pianist for the Broadway hit show "Forever Tango," says of founder and producer Laura Camacho “We are in the presence of an excellent bass player who really knows the Tango style like not many.”

“I met Laura Camacho at a tango workshop in the Conservatory Astor Piazzolla in the year 2003. She already had a solid classical foundation, which made her have no problem practicing the tango specific bass exercises that she would easily assimilate.

Today she has an important artistic career including teaching. She performs various genres, especially tango, and is part of groups of the new generation with which she has performed on important stages in Argentina and abroad. Congratulations, Laura, for your contribution to tango with such an excellent performance.”

“I had the opportunity to play with Laura Camacho at the Tango Festival in Philadelphia in 2022 when she came to play with my orchestra as a very special guest and I was really impressed by her performance on that day. After that, I had the opportunity to share with her a few recordings that she was directing and I also listened to her latest release “Para Compartir” both things that made me confirm we are in the presence of an excellent bass player who really knows the Tango style like not many.”

“Laura Camacho is the most passionate and dedicated multi-genre musician I have known in years, especially in Argentine Tango: the world we share. She is down-to-earth, precise, brutally-honest yet full of love when it comes to musical expression, and her personality reflects that as well. I am honored to have shared the stage with this profound human and musician.”
