Our Story…

My musical journey began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, dancing tango with my grandmother in the living room of her apartment in San Telmo. I saw Osvaldo Pugliese perform live, studied at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory of Music, and played double bass in several ensembles. I had an unforgettable experience opening for the legendary Mariano Mores, and the powerful sound of his live performances became one of my musical touchstones. At 30, I left Buenos Aires to further my double bass studies on a university scholarship in the United States, where I earned two advanced degrees. Since then, I have spent over a decade playing with the Athens Tango Project and teaching tango to musicians worldwide. I have collaborated with artists such as Tanghetto, Horacio Romo, Pablo Agri, Pablo Estigarribia, and Julián Peralta, as well as Latin Grammy-nominated pianist Emiliano Messiez and tango composer Ariel Pirotti, who both appear on this album. I currently compose music for theater, direct ensembles for which I also write, and am pursuing a doctorate in ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin. My research focuses on young tango communities, tango between Argentina and the US, Latin American music, and sound studies.

She is musical and she is entrepreneurial, essential elements to transcend today’s music environment. “I met Laura Camacho at a tango workshop in the Conservatory Astor Piazzolla in the year 2003. She already had a solid classical foundation, which made her have no problem practicing the tango specific bass exercises that she would easily assimilate.

Today she has an important artistic career including teaching. She performs various genres, especially tango, and is part of groups of the new generation with which she has performed on important stages in Argentina and abroad. Congratulations, Laura, for your contribution to tango with such an excellent performance.”

“I had the opportunity to play with Laura Camacho at the Tango Festival in Philadelphia in 2022 when she came to play with my orchestra as a very special guest and I was really impressed by her performance on that day. After that, I had the opportunity to share with her a few recordings that she was directing and I also listened to her latest release “Para Compartir” both things that made me confirm we are in the presence of an excellent bass player who really knows the Tango style like not many.”
